Jinxed Jointing

Im no expert in jointing. I understand the theory of how to mill a board flat & square and Ive done it on many occasions. Ive also failed to do it on many occasions.
Saturday was one of those occasions where the jointer only served to maul wood rather than mill it. I began at about 1:00 pm with what I thought was the simple task of milling some 1x oak boards flat & square so that I could make some door thresholds. As the lumber was already S4, I figured it would be a quick process of taking out the slight bowing and then Id be ready to make thresholds by say, 1:30ish.

After marking the first board with chalk I ran it over the jointer. Then I ran it over again, and again and again. Each time it took more off the leading end, but the chalk marks on the tail end remained. I was creating a giant oak wedge. On seeing that I had ruined one of my threshold blanks I immediately checked the alignment of the jointer blades. I found that two were fine, and the third seemed a bit high. This led me to pull out my owners manual and box of jointer tools & accessories. After what seemed like forever (probably about an hour) I had the offending blade re-set to be even with the others.
I ran a test piece through and made another wedge.
This time I used John Whites Adjusting a Jointer video from Fine Woodworking (sorry, its a members only video) and re-set the outfeed table height. Ive previously used this method with good results. Not this time, though. I had been using roughly 3" wide rips of wood for the table height adjustment and milled each one down to unusable width before being satisfied with the results.

As I was out of scrap at this point, the kids and I piled into the truck and to Lowes we went. I picked up some pine boards to use when setting the height and a new piece of (poor quality) oak to replace the one I had earlier destroyed. Once we were home, I attempted to set up the jointer again. This time I was able to properly perform John Whites adjustment. The adjustment uses the edge of test boards to set the outfeed table height. Unfortunately, once I turned the board on its face, I was again making wedges.
Thats where I decided to call it a night. I had stopped making progress. Sunday I started anew with more test pieces. After about 4 hours of frustration, I gave up again on Sunday. I walked achoice from the jointer, lingering in the shop just long enough to make John Whites Jointer Knife Setup Jig (not sure if its members only).

Now its Monday and the glue in the jig dried. Unfortunately for my jointer, due to an upcoming vacation and all the work that needs to be done before we go achoice, Ill not get to try the jig for about two weeks. Hopefully by then my frustration will have abated and Ill have the patience to fight the damn thing into submission. Between the new jig, the renewed patience the R&R should bring and a viewing of the Wood Whisperer Jointer Setup video, Im hoping that I wont have to walk achoice out of frustration again.

Shaker Step Stool Unplugged

Starting off the new year with a project I have been wanting to do for awhile now and I finally got around to it. This is my version of the step stool featured in the Jan/Feb 09 issue of FWW. (I believe this was also shown on Rough Cut Woodworking with Tommy Mac). This is a milestone of sorts for me as I built this entire unit with hand tools, the only power involved were the lights in my shop. It is constructed from Cherry and Maple.

The Parts

The parts are cut and ready for assembly. All of the dovetails are hand cut of course, the boards were ripped and cross cut with hand saws, the pieces planed smooth using hand planes. One challenge I had was jointing the edges of the longer pieces and keeping those edges square. Not shown in the photo of the tools I used in the Stanley #6 plane I used for that task. I think I will need to add a #7 or #8 to the tool chest for that task in the future.

The Tools

 

The tools I used are shown above with the except of the aforementioned #6 and my saw bench. 

The finish is General Finishes Vintage Cherry Dye stain and that tamed the sap wood that was throughout the cherry I had on hand to build this. I added a top coat of General finishes Arm-R-Coat. Overall dimensions are 20"wide, 14" deep, and 20" high. Slightly smaller that that shown in the article.

I really enjoyed building this project. While this isnt the first time I have cut dovetails, this is the first time I started from scratch with hand tools. While I am happy with most of the joinery, I thought back to the saying  "Better is the enemy of good" (If you been to New Hampshire you know where I learned that) and was satisfied that the next time I cut dovetails there will be an improvement. I also was reminded that sharp tools make the task much easier. Am I ready to sell the table saw yet?, no, but I think I am one step closer.

a 60 wide slab of claro walnut

well, we got a big one here. its going to aspen when its finished. this is the widest slab of claro walnut we have ever had ... it clocks in at 63" at the wide point ... after we trim it up a bit, it will be about 60" wide at both ends and about 8 long. it will have one of our new trapezoid bases. click the photos to enlarge them....

will and trevor wheeled it out to the shade by the woodshed yesterday to begin the flattening process. fire up the makitas ...

the slab was astonishingly flat for something so wide ... a tribute to skip and norman at good hope hardwoods and their ability to dry this stuff so we can work it up. its truly amazing. that really is a four foot level there on the right end. the winding sticks are about 45" i think.

time ran out before they could completely smooth the face, but the bottom side is pretty much ready to sand and they should be able to finish this side today ... more later as we progress.

today we finished the rough smoothing of the top of the slab, did some rough sanding and mocked up the base with some 2 x 4s we had from when we picked it up at our friends loading dock.

just like this only in natural finish steel .. all for now
