The 26 Table is Gone

Well, OK, we finished up the 26 x 9 table on Friday. It took a lot of people and a lot of steps and processes and, when it was done, I was disappointed to find that it almost looked easy ... except when you stop to think about it ... The pieces were made in my shop and then assembled in my garage on temporary bases while the real bases were being fabricated in Steve Holmans shop down the road. I had no place to easily set up either table in my shop while it was pretty easy to clean out my garage ... We did set the 20 foot table up (below) in Steves shop (after moving two tools and disassembling part of his dust collection system) on its real base to check it and then reassembled it one more time here to check the final fit when we received all the cut granite pieces and fitted the center pieces. Whew .. just writing about his one is a lot of work .... Step by step we go .... click the pictures to enlarge them ..
This is the 20 table ... This previous post is all about that one ... Theres a video of Trevor doing a stroll around the table here ...
The base pieces for the 20 foot table in the finishing process ...
Ok ... back at the garage where we disassembled the top of the 26 table from its temporary base,Swept the floor ...
Brought in the real base parts
Assembled those and leveled them up ..
Added the steel ...
Next, we reinstalled the mdf top pieces and faired the curves and tops of the curved cherry moldings. This assured us that the notches for the steel in the otriggers, and the 56 holes tapped in the 14 piece of steel ( 7 different lengths) lined up with the 56 countersunk holes in the mdf top pieces and that everything would fit and tighten up, and once it gets to its final home, things will go together smoothly. We decided early on that neither table would be assembled after the parts were finished until it reaches its final destination ... As you can see above, there are a LOT of pieces and its alchoices risky to move things like that around ....
Ready for the granite and panels.. You can see the bolts in this photo. Those bolts were integral to the engineering and support of the cantilevered granite pieces ...
14 of the 18, 2 x 44.6" pieces of granite in place here
All in .. all fitted ... There are 32 places where at least four points come together and line up with other points on the table ... 1 of the 32 places below .. two cherry, two granite and a center panel
By the end of the day Friday ... all the parts that needed veneering and finishing were at Steves and I was left with a half empty garage and 5 carts with 28 pieces of granite .... party time !!!
There are several other earlier posts so that you can get the whole feel for the process HERE and HERE.

Shop Is Ready

My wife and daughter bought this sign for me, its on the door to the  basement area. I carved that little guy years ago .
Well, it has been a busy few weeks since my last post but the shop is at the point where the tools both hand and power are back in a place where they can be found, and more importantly used.
Overall view walking into the shop area
I had finished two of the walls with bead board plywood and thought I would stop there but after looking at it, I decided to remove the blanket insulation on the two concrete walls.
Replaced the blanket insulation and replaced it with the rigid panel insulation, added fir strips to attach the panels. The outlet/wire mold went in earlier and the lights now operate on a switch at the bottom the the stairs. Two circuits were added by choice of a sub panel in another area of the basement. (Thanks Cuz)
Removing blanket insulation
Fir strips and rigid panal insulation
Another view during construction
Turning area, chair patterns, etc
Carving bench & clamp storage
Carving on the wall above the bench
Overall I am pretty happy with the outcome, what you dont see is utility tube I added on the backside of the wall where the lathe sits. There was plumbing in this area for a roughed in bath, and given we have 3 already, this worked out to be a great area to add the tub (evidently builders dont add those anymore). The other added benefit to that area is gives me a lot of area to store wood and other suppliers. Even with the one window, there is plenty of light. As mentioned in an earlier post, the first big project is building the new workbench. The dust collector is on order but the shop vac is working as a back-up for now. I havent decided on the ceiling yet, maybe later, well see.

design is a process

well, after about 35 years of this kind of work, i have come to really appreciate the process of design, as much as the event of making stuff, which also is a process, and not a list of a linear progression of steps.  we do something, analyze it, do something different, analyze that, and step by step, move it all forward in small increments.  to get to the model above, ive been working with the builder, the client, and two different designers for a couple of weeks now.  it was a lot of work, but i think weve got a handle on it now, and it has been interesting.  click the photos to enlarge them ...
it started with some architects sketches for a more or less traditional kitchen, with a pantry in a separate room off to the right.
we went with that originally, and i had just finished my shop drawings below, when i was informed that there was a new designer on board, up from florida, with some new ideas of how the kitchen should look.

he wanted a more streamlined, clean and modern look ...
after quickly revising my drawings to reflect his initial input above, trevor and i visited the site again and waved our arms and pencils and cardboard around with everyone for a while, until i realized that it was going to be a little more complicated then that ...  i offered to make a scale model.  time was short, but we got on it
so the site looked like below thursday afternoon ...
and the model looked like below friday morning ...
so after another meeting friday morning, it was back to the shop, and mid afternoon, back to the site with the model below, adjustments and additions completed ...hot glue and double cardboard ... nothing better
north and east
east and south ...
back to the new shop drawings monday ... a couple more model changes and were good to go ...
so now, the confusing little room is gone, it all feels more open, clean and spacious, and, its the weekend ...

The Claro Walnut Slab Table Is Done

OK.... We finally finished it ... In the end, it turns out we cant deliver it until the carpenters will be finished in another month, so there was no rush to complete it, except, the client was going to be in town this weekend, and, #2, I need the money. So ... all together now and looking good. It is somewhat surprising, #1, how heavy it is now that its all together, and #2, how completely rigid the steel support structure ended up being ... Grab the end with both hands and try to shake it; you almost cant even wiggle it a little. Im very pleased with our engineering department. Click these pictures to enlarge them and visit these other posts for the full story ...

This was a challenging photograph. My camera is not quite good enough to keep the whole 10 feet of it in focus and also the reflections from windows and lights in the somewhat shiny finish were really tough to eliminate .. Best I can do I think ...
A view from below ... The base is bolted together and will completely disassemble for delivery to CT
The picture below is a close up of this section of the table
Close up of the crotch end of the slab ... Amazing variety of figure and color
With (coincidentally) ten almost finished ladder back chairs for another client. I first wrote about these chairs in a post last November.

Deardorf Camera Repair

well, we have put our toes into what i would imagine to be an extremely teeny tiny niche market ... we have a friend, george bouret, who is a professional photographer and gallery owner in pawlet, vt. he bought a new lens for his antique deardorf view camera. it had a different focal length from most other lenses used on this type of camera so he needed a holder that would position the new lens one inch closer to the film. will whipped up the new one and after a little fine tuning ... (angling the bottom slightly as the holder had to swing into the opening because the top metal holder was fixed) off he went ... i dont expect much repeat business on this one but george says even the normal replacement lens boards are hard to find and really expensive if you can find them .... who knows ... maybe well be retiring soon after all ... ahhhh, just kidding ... what would i have to write about then? click the photos to enlarge them ... original on the right ..
new one on the left, before modification ... good to go now ...

Big Claro Slab Table 2 23 The Slab is Here

2/17 OK ... were almost underchoice on a new Claro walnut slab top table ... This one is for a kitchen in Connecticut and as you can see from the 1/6th scale model above, its a long narrow one ... The slab will be about 32-34 " in width and about 10 long after its cut .... It left today or will leave soon from Good Hope Hardwoods in Kemblesville, PA, and it should arrive here early next week .... Over the last ten years I have gotten 5 or six claro slabs, several big bubinga boards and a couple really wide pieces of 8/4 cherry. They have a great new website too. Check it out .. Find a board and well build a table for you ... Click the pictures to enlarge them ...
After looking at 4 or 5 options, this is the one we chose ... Well have to doctor the flares a bit and trim it too length, but it looks like a beauty.
We took the inspiration for our 1.5" thick steel base from this Shaker table from the 1800s
CAD drawing of the base parts ... We originally were going to cut pieces and weld them back together, but it occurred to us that steel was at least as cheap as welding and grinding and well probably get a smoother item.
To be sure we had it right, we cut a couple of plywood samples on the cnc and mocked up the look with a slab I have on hand that is looking for a home ... desk anyone? Its 30 to 42 wide and about 7 long .. (4/4 ...This slab has since been sold and will be a coffee table .. )
American black walnut ... Better picture of that slab here ...
Updated 2/23/2010 ... The wood arrived from Goodhope Hardwoods today. And, its a real beauty ... Ive only made a few passes to get a sense of how it is, and yessir .. it is really nice ... Below is a small puddle of alcohol we splashed on the curly end .... Lots of figure ...
Below I have chalked it to indicate where we plan to cut it to the clients size specs .. +/- 34-35 x 10
Updated 2 19 ... The metal for the table base is done ... well tie them together next week with some 3/8 x 2" steel across the top where the notch is and add the braces to that ...
Base parts, last Friday ... Now that we have the slab, well work on that soon too ...
One end polished slightly
