Architects Artisans

Dorset Custom Furniture got a nice mention and post about our work on the blog Architects + Artisans ... Thoughtful Design For a sustainable World ...
"Architects + Artisans is a sophisticated, well-informed provider of content, images, and knowledge concerning excellent architecture, artisanship and sustainability for the 21st century. It is not just about designers – but about the people and products that make a well-designed place ring true. It is written and edited by J. Michael Welton, whose work on architecture, design and travel has appeared in The New York Times, Interior Design, Dwell, Green Source and Travel + Leisure. "

Michael titled his post about us Clients as Friends, Friends as Clients. Since were currently working on a wall of cabinets and a fireplace surround for our friends who own Mother Myricks Confectionery, his post is very appropriately titled. Our first project with Ron and Jacki was in 1983 when they opened their candy store in Manchester and we have been friends ever since. I appreciate his publishing our work and encourage you to check out his blog.

Self Storing Table Leaves

OK, Ive done this enough without documenting it ... We first figured this out in 1998 by more or less copying a clients table that had a mechanism that worked pretty well ... Weve built tables with it probably 4 or 5 times since then, but never carefully documented the process with notes and drawings ... Im going to give it a whirl here ... Click the pictures to enlarge them and I hope you can figure it out .... Be sure to make a small mockup in ply or mdf to try it all out before you attempt it on your real table ... Works OK with four legs or a trestle ... We alchoices put some felt on the bottom of the table top where the leaf closes ... strips or larger pieces .. I put a very short video of the mechanism in operation on you tube here

what were working on now

I did a talk last evening with Marc Spagnolo, aka "The Wood Whisperer". Mark has created an amazing social networking site for woodworkers, designers and craftsmen of all skill levels ... Check it out here if you arent familiar with his site .... Anychoice, I thought I might talk about what was happening in the shop this week, but mainly, we covered more of the history and general background of the business. Tools, design processes, shop size, relationships with clients ... Most challenging project ... It was fun and when I get a link, Ill post it here.
Sam has completed four tuteurs. Tomato cages for those of you unfamiliar with the French .,.. Were doing some design work with a potential client who is interested in an Arts and Crafts" style screen, sort of like the one below that he saw on my website. We made that for a client who was a world traveler and had a large collection of Oceanic objects ....
We also got underchoice on an 18 wall of bookshelves and fireplace mantle ... Its a paint project, but it will have a great refined look when it gets to its home ... Were really just getting started ... more on that project laterWere also getting underchoice on an English elm oval shaped table which will also deserve a post of its own before long. And Will is finishing up a vanity and mirror for a longtime client
The sink is actually routed from a 6" thick slab of onyx and the top edge thats left is 2" ... more on that later too ...
The mirror has some brass details

Literally Working On A Table

Yesterday, Trevor gave us a new meaning to the phrase working on a table ... Here he is, literally, working ON THE TABLE ! And, theres plenty of room if more of us wanted to get up there and work on it with him. ... And, this is less than half of it ... 3/7ths of it to be exact. Anychoice, its coming along. Today Jim set up a temporary frame for the whole table in my garage and it looks like I will just be able to close the overhead door once the top is all in place. We feel we have to have the top with the center sections and granite templates all together at least once before we call the gentleman who is going to pick up the templates and cut the granite. Cant be too careful on this one, and it wont fit in the shop. Click the pictures to enlarge them ... Plenty more on this project later ... Its a big one ...
The far end ... The first four sections not shown here have already been fitted and edged. Here, we are cutting the templates and the preparing the center sections for veneer ..
With the end section removed and the center section of the table now in its place ...
The temporary base in my garage with the steel tubing in place and the end caps welded on. Next, as each section is finished and the steel is primed, well put everything in place and bolt the table sections to the steel and they will be finished like that.
