a custom walnut sideboard

well, were coming down the home stretch on this one ... its walnut, and sam is nearly finished welding and polishing the steel base ...click the photos to enlarge them ..
all done   1/15 ... off to long island
 heres the story ..
we started with the clients very detailed drawing with measurements that she kindly sent to start the dialog ... most folks are not this organized.
after putting it into my cad program, we made a few changes to get things under budgetary control and ended up with the elevation below.  the piece will have a stone top and a steel base,
here it is, early on,with the box defined, the runners in and the face frame on.
here, the drawers and doors are fitted up ... the client did not like our choice of crotch walnut veneer and so, will made a new pair of doors with calmer grain ... no problem.  thats why we send photos ...
its in the finish process now.  the base is complete, and well put it all together next week.
there will be a wine rack in the center drawer, and room for other bar bottles stored vertically in a pull out drawer behind the center doors.

update on the metal shop

update, 8/3/13 ... except for the doors, we are weather tight
well ok ... i casually mentioned to our metal shop builder, scott thompson, that he didnt put the traditional pine bough on the ridge when he nailed up the last rafter yesterday.  so, today when sam and i came back from town, there it was.  its a longstanding, worldwide, tradition, with a documented history going back to at least 700 AD.  its been a tradition with all of our buildings, and i was glad to see it.  so, were coming along now.  we should be in good shape and relatively watertight by this time next week ... here are a few pics of the progress.  click the photos to enlarge them ..
 walls
the 30 TJIs for the clear span .. long ones, and heavy ...
makes for a nice open space though

gable walls with soffits and facias built on the ground
we needed to call in the neighbors to help stand those up as they are 30 long and over 12 tall.  our friends steve and kevin from holman studios and chris bowlen from bill laberges shop came by, and we all played barn raising for about a half hour.
 tah dah  !!
home stretch ... plywood on the road side and some ply on the dormer roof ...

a claro walnut sideboard

final update 6/7 ... ready to go ... click the photos to enlarge them ..
all in all done ... rolling to north carolina soon ... good job boys ... will on veneers, drawers and finishing, sam on base, and trevor on case work ..
another update 5 29 ... almost ready for finish .. lookin good
update 5 22
faces of the drawers  .. inside of the doors
will is working on the faces of the doors and they should be glued up sometime tomorrow.
were working on a fun one.  we have accumulated a small pile of cutoffs from the 15 or twenty claro walnut tables weve made in the past couple of years and now weve got a use for them.  this client bought our table back in february and it is being used as a desk in a law office down south.  so, next is the credenza and coffee table.  i made the sketch above assuming we would cut the cutoffs up into veneers and use them for the faces of the doors and drawers.  were just starting that part of the project now, and i hope to have it into some kind of viewable shape by the weekend, when its vermont open studio again !!!
more on that later.  in the meantime, click the pictures to enlarge them....
case with square pieces of mdf to straighten it up; before we added the back.  there is no face frame, so case stability and the connection to the steel base is paramount.
here, the assembled case is sitting on a timber strand base mockup to work out the sizes and kinks in that.
and for the top and ends, we got these three incredible 28-30" wide walnut boards from irion lumber.

one piece sides about 24" wide and a one piece top, about 25.25" wide
here, were working out the mdf substrate sizes for the doors and drawer faces.  in the end, trevor cut them back and installed 5/8ths x 5/8ths solid claro edges, which youll see when the doors and drawers are opened.  its now on its custom steel base that sam finished last week.
will, slicing up the veneers with out new starrett band saw blades,  mighty sharp!
a quick mockup of a few of the slices ...
another
inside of the first door ... figuring out the process
ready to glue on ... i think well do the last piece of veneer and some butterfly work on the cnc after gluing.
the coffee table is ready to go and patiently waiting ... more later ..

helen day arts center show

well be showing, along with other members of the guild of vermont furniture makers, at the helen day art center in a show that opens on the 18th of january, and runs through the 14th of april.  well have 6 of our ladderback chairs  below, with the table above.  stowe is a powerful tourist/ski area in northern vermont, and we already have some new, and old, customers in that area.  it should be a good show. click the photos to enlarge them ...
the chairs are ready to go ...
 update 1/13

i dropped off our table and chairs at helen day yesterday and went to meet with one of my new stowe clients to make a template for a spark screen that sam will be making for an outdoor firepit at their home there.
i had to dig for a little bit to uncover it, but i think i got it ...
and i also got to see the house in its finished form, including the cushion on the curved, fitted bench we made at the top of the three story circular stairchoice..we also previously made a hanging swing, which was fun, and a couple of other tables, including the main dining table  and in other news, (back to thhe january 4, post) the table below, another in our niche of big claro walnut slab tables, will be leaving for dallas, texas next week sometime.  its a great looking slab with nice grain and a powerful presence.

it had an interesting flaw that went completely through the slab and was about 3/4 of an inch wide at its widest point once the loose bark inclusion fell out.

we filled it with our usual stuff and added a little color with some oil soluble aniline dyes from lockwood.
all good ... ready for the legs and the finish
maybelle approves !
