The Ladderbacks

Ok, I admit, this chair design took a long time to get together ... There were several posts along the choice, originally starting back in October !?. For one reason or another, there was no hurry, and now that we have finally finished 16 of them, Im really liking them for a number of reasons ... Clickl the photos to enlarge them ...
1. They will look good with a lot of different table styles.
2. We can actually do most of the joinery work on our cnc ... I know, I know, thats cheating but I have yet to EVER make a profit on a new chair design. There is some small hope for this one.
3. They are incredibly light to move around and more comfortable than the look.
4. They dont take a lot of wood.
5. I feel like they will also be more durable than they look. (see leg test results below)
The photo at the top of the post is with my clientss Nakashima table which arrived the day before our chairs .. I think that was actually the no hurry part.

By themselves. The chair in the background is lacking its pierced plywood seat support which was a last minute brainstorm to add structural strength without laborious and weaker corner blocks. It also afforded good attachment for the slip seat ... gold star for engineering if I do say so myself.

trevor finished up the 68 pieces for a custom floor inlay were making for a local client today.  you can see half of it here.  it will be 3/4 " thick, 60" in diameter when its installed.  click the photos to enlarge them.

he started with this cad drawing i made from my memory of a compass rose we did in a sea chest lid about 15 years ago.  that was a small inlay, and i cant find a picture, but i remember the layout.  we then made a quick 1/4 inch mdf sample of half the circle, which gave us patterns for the blanks.  

there was, of course, a little bit of programming involved. but, on the whole, it was a pretty quick piece of cnc work compared to cutting and fitting the pieces by hand.  the next step, is the final fitting and gluing to the mdf core and installing it in the floor after it is laid. more on this project later ...

2nd Floor CNC

First time visitors to the second floor of my shop often ask How did you get that thing up here? Invariably, I cant find the book with the pictures from the installation so Im putting them here so I can find them ... Open Studio is coming in May and I know Ill need them then ... Ready to go .. +/- 2;30 in the afternoon.
The next morning ... Noel Dydo, my main excavating man at the wheel. It was a borrowed Lull and his last comment before he got on board was I havent ever driven one this old before . Comforting.
Anychoice ... In it went at about 11:00.
Buttoned back up by the end of the day ... That was five years ago in November and I think my last payment will be in July ... Mortgage burning party coming up ....
