a walll hung mahogany demi lune

cool project here form our friends at LDa Architecture and Interiors in Cambridge, Mass.  its a wall hung mahogany console with brass details at the base ... fun and functional ... click the photos to enlarge them.
heres the concept .. the base of the vertical support sits on top of the baseboard, and there is a steel plate with a cleat screwed to the vertical down through the top of it.
the bottom of the top is routed for the steel and the cleat ...
the cleat is then screwed to two studs and the top is screwed on up through the steel ... viola! ..  a wall hung console
with a little brass detail that i believe will be antiqued after the finish is applied

seeders instruments banjo 12

will wrapped up banjo #12 last week and his client/friend is coming to pick it up tomorrow afternoon.  jeremy is going to be one happy banjo picker.  his friend is a part time professional musician and you can here jeremys band, the flat top trio, at this link .  click the photos to enlarge them.
will used his newly learned engraving talents on this project.   he learned his new skills in west virginia this summer in a class taught by kevin enoch, a banjo maker and master engraver.  coincidentally, kevin lives in beltsville, maryland, and will and i were able to visit him when we were on our choice to deliver the pool table we took the virginia in august.  it was about 5 minutes out of our choice and it was a unique experience for me.
kevin enoch, of enoch banjos, is a master banjo builder and master engraver and he was kind enough to give us the tour of his studio.
he had a work in progress and i wish now i had taken a little more time to get a good photo of it.  amazing, artistic craftsmanship, and i know will was totally inspired by the course, and by the studio visit.  its not often we get to beltsville.
#12 has a 12" pot with a very mellow sound.  the pot is constructed from blackened claro walnut, of which we seem to have many scraps of lately, with a mahogany end cap and a wenge tone ring, an ebony fret board, and a figured mahogany neck.  a handsome combination for sure.
vermont pride is strong here, and at the 5th string fret and a few frets below, will added new versions of his vermont touch.  these are the counties engraved on a miniature map of vermont.
the little flowers are actually dots with engraved dividers that make them look like multi piece inlays.  clever.
a little carving by the 5th string tuner
 the whole deal ...
and on wills website, seeders intruments , there are a couple short videos so you can hear it as well as see more photos and a list of the banjos vital statistics.  this is the banjo will was working on when the made in vermont video was made for WCAX.  in case you missed that profile, you can see that short video here.
all for now ...

Alleviating Social Media Fears

Bill LaBerge and I attended the quarterly meeting of the Vermont Wood Manufacturers Association Friday.. It started at The Brandon Inn with the business meeting in the morning. From there we adjourned to the former Brandon training center for a tour of the design center and new woodshop of The McKernon Group, longtime luxury home builders in the area ... It was a very impressive facility and the people we met there were very friendly and informative ... They fed us a nice lunch and set us up for the real reason I went to the meeting.
The afternoon session featured a presentation by Rachel Carter, who owns a public relations firm in Charlotte, Vermont. Rachels mission is to provide Vermont businesses with "individualized public relations programs encompassing the power of social media and the ingenuity of grassroots marketing." It was, overall, a fascinating and well done presentation. She started with the basics, LinkedIn and Facebook, and went on to cover things like blogging, search engines, free online listing and analysis sites and Twitter, the micro blogging site. Ive resisted some of this stuff so far, but after listening to Rachel, I think I will sloooowly integrate as much of it as I can into my
online marketing program and see how it goes ... All it seems to take is time and some interest in the process. I already have a blog. Im already personally on Facebook and Ive had some fun with both of those ... LinkedIn ... I can do that ... Twitter??? The thought makes me kind of cringe a little, but Ill check it out and see whats up with that. Who knows. I think Bill Gates is Twittering now. My first computer had a 40 MB hard drive and cost $3500. Weve come a long choice from there ... Onward ...

the wood that you have

we finished this unusual coffee table last week. i never would have come up with this design on my own without having an unusual shaped piece of wood to start with. you work with the wood that you have ... its actually a very cool piece in person, and everyone who has seen it so far has had some kind of positive comment to make about it. of course, its hard not to like wood like this ....
its vaguely nakashima influenced with its simple, square legs, but the box originated with the project that involved the other half of the original claro walnut slab.
that project involved one of the 3 original claro walnut slabs that i purchased from goodhope, oh, back in about 2006. in 2010, one of my clients purchased the last of those slabs to use for an interesting console that had to be notched around a carving from bali that hung over a wall hung heater. the design was driven by many factors, and i cant find a photo of the finished piece, but when we were finished, we were left with the half slab you see below with a piece missing on each end. click the photos to enlarge them. more photos of claro walnut can be seen by clicking on the claro walnut slab tables category below the archive
the cut for the console table marked out in tape ...
the leftover has been standing in my office closet since and the project has been on again, off again for a couple of years ... i am glad its finally finished.
above is the cad drawing from the console project and you can see the shape of the coffee table slab in the negative space of the plan view ...
no date on the sketch, but im betting its from 2009 sometime ..
and heres what i did with the left over, though i now see i somehow got the notch for the box in the wrong place from the sketch ... we somehow got past that though, and the table will be delivered soon ... it will be a cool story if it ends up in the same room as the console ...
not much to detail on the process ... the box is mitered play with a ply top with 1/8" thick veneer, rabbeted and dropped into the open end so only the veneer was left and then flushed off and beveled. looks like solid wood, though you know it cant be ... fun project ...

4 22 The Duck Bed Has Flown To Its New Home

Update 4/22 ... Usually, after a long and complex project like this one, Im glad to see it go. You know, time for the next one. This one was different. Its been in the works for about six weeks, involved a lot of old and new skills, and everyone in the shop pitched in ... I give Will the credit for the turning, carving, fussy inlay fitting and finishing; Trevor gets the credit for the complex cnc work on the headboard and walnut overlay with the inlay pockets, and Sam, well, he did a great job with the metal shaping and patina work ... Ill take a little credit, for the CAD drawing of most of the ducks and for leading the parade, but it was overall a shop wide effort. Jim pitched in too but mainly his job was to keep our other projects truckin along. The clients were happy today and I thank them for their trust in us to commission and support us on a challenging project like this. Whew ! Ill also miss the ongoing duck puns ... ducks in a row, all ducked up, just ducky, duckinaround, what a bunch of quacks ... and so it went ... The whole project was a great one ..
