Open Studio mr lucky stops by for a hat

We had a great Open Studio Memorial Day .... It was easily our best turnout ever. We estimate there were 250-300 people total over the two days ... Lots of clients, a couple of neighbors and lots of people with their Southern Vermont Artisans driving tour looking for signatures for the raffle drawing ... There were four artists at our site so that was probably at least part of our draw. Kit sold a bunch of jewelry and I sold a couple things ... Penny did ok, and Denise was happy to have been included for the first time at our site ... She had not previously met Mr. Lucky, and was happy to assist him with a hat choice .... sam finished up this steel coffee table frame last week.  it will be leaving for chicago as soon as the shippers can get here.  it started out as 40" x 40" and then, at the last minute, the size was changed to 60" x 60".  quite the change actually.  its now a pretty big object.  18" high.  rainbow finish steel, and it will have a chicago cut stone inside the top frame.  click the photos to enlarge them ..

 here it is in process .. 1 x 3 tubing top frame;  2.5" square legs;  1 x 3 aprons and supports.

 

 the jig was 66 x 66, which took up quite a bit of real estate in sams metal shop.

the color isnt 100% accurate here, but this picture shows the bolt details requested by the client to give the piece an industrial look ... works for me.

Progress on the Claro Walnut Slab Table

9/19 ... Update on the table progress ... The chairs left Friday morning and will return mid week...
And we assembled the table as we went out the door Friday afternoon ...

Were making progress on the big Claro walnut slab table I described in the two most recent posts below. We should have it upright on the base tomorrow and ready for the finish next week. It looks like it will be a beautiful piece ... The slab has some pretty interesting and incredible color and grain variations and we like the new base design that the customers encouraged us to create ... It is going to be a heavy one though ... Hope they have a good floor system ... Click the pictures to enlarge them ...
The top is butterflied and scraped relatively smooth. Well assemble the base and complete work on the bottom of the table and hopefully have it upright for the weekend ...
The chairs will be leaving in the morning to get their Danish cord seats at Sandy Sherman Chair Caning in Brookline, Vermont ... Its our first effort with the Danish cord and Im looking forward to seeing how it works how ...
We started the day with a couple hours of drilling and tapping ...
and a test assembly before we finish sanding and varnishing on the bottom tomorrow... all for now ...

Chair Progress A 6 Pack

After returning from the great Thanksgiving trip, and back to my day job, I was able to hit the shop hard and finish all six chairs up to the point of upholstery. I finished the chairs with 2 coats of General Finishes Lamp Black Milk Paint. I had not used that product before and I was pleased with the coverage and performance straight from the can. Top coat is General Finishes Hi-Perfomance semi-gloss. Well deliver the chairs next week and will apply the 2" foam and the fabric my daughter-in-law picks out.If you dont like mortise and tenon, dont build these chairs :) The are 22 of them per chairs so I cut a total of 132, not counting the ones I screwed up. I think overall the chairs came out well and I will post some photos of the upholstered chairs after we return from the Christmas trip.
