More Photos of Yacht Tender

These are just a few photos, of the finished boat and what it looks like today.

It was an ambitious project, but I learned a lot about woodworking during the process.

The Half Round Tables Are Done

OK, except for the black, diamond shaped pulls that well add to the drawers tomorrow, these tables are complete ..... Beautiful job by Will on all the details ... I hope you all enjoyed following the process ... Here are the other posts ... Build a half round table, start to finish ... Click the photos to enlarge them ...

Before the finish on the tops and without the drawers
Joinery check on the pattern or on your full size drawing ...
Close up of the joinery ... center drawer border tenons on the left
We sort of winged the drawer joinery as I have found in the past that efficiently dovetailing sides to curving fronts is next to impossible. Once the radius gets below a certain dimension the parts don;t merge together gracefully ... You could do it but there is only so much labor intensive work you can ask your clients to pay for ... If I were doing it for myself .... I would still do it this choice ... You can leave questions on this post in the comments section if you like ... Ill do my best to get back to you on them ... All for now ...

a couple of restaurant tables

well, heres a fun project ... two large english elm slab tables with metal rebar bases for a restaurant in bethesda, maryland. weve been working with amy krol, a competent and responsive designer at aria group architects in oak park, illinois. her concept sketches are above and we have gone back and forth with her over the last two months, refining the construction and material selection details. were on the home stretch now and aside from a column location question (the column hasnt been built yet) were ready to wrap them up and ship them out. click the photos to enlarge them ...
we started at berkshire products in sheffield, massachusetts, a great source of amazing and unusual wood for woodworkers the world over. we picked these three slabs from their photos on the internet. the one above for the single long table ...
and this matchinig pair, which will be butted end to end and notched around the column as shown in the drawings below.
next came the model stage. i drew them in my cad program, but in the end, the random, this looks good placement was the choice to go ... some things you can overplan.
there was some concern that the skinny rebar (actually, its 5/8ths and not that skinny) would flex, as in theory, rebar gets its strength from the concrete surrounding it ...
sam said it would be no problem but just for fun, we loaded the unglued model and applied a little side pressure ... solid as a rock, even with 1.8th inch rubberwood dowels and no glue ...
we trimmed, smoothed and stiffened the single slab ...
cool top ... and started construction on the real bases in the metal shop.
sam came up with the great concept of temporary pipe and threaded rod through the corner holes where the table bases will be bolted to the floor and to the wood tops, which held the two 1/2 x 12 steel plates parallel, and, when the bolts were tightened, completely square. he tacked the rebars randomly and checked them out, then welded them securely ... very cool, but when we figured it out, the long base weighs +/- 450 pounds !! fortunately, we were prepared and actually constructed all the steel bases on dollies.
base #1, resting in the drivechoice ... this dolly was a touch under built...
the double table is wider at +/- 42" and we built those bases upside down, using 1/4 x 20" steel plates for the base tops to give the wider wood tops more support.
we bolted them to some timberstrand on the floor of the garage ...
and built a two piece mock column the appropriate size for the full effect.
view down the 17 footer
the column top is shown here moved off center to its approximate location. the final column location will be determined with cardboard templates by the job foreman on site and we will cut them to the templates before shipping ...
the single slab table ... 98" x +/- 30"
loyal readers will note our upgraded garage extended workplace we thought we were done up here after the big tables last year, but noooo ... so, now we have a painted floor, full insulation and sheetrock, heat if we need it, and today, a commercial dehumidifier arrived for summer work ... were officially ready for the big ones ...

Progress On The Giant Tables

Thats Trevor down there on the end of the table .... about 30 achoice ... Click the picture to enlarge it and see him smiling achoice down there. Hes allowed to smile as this table has been pretty much his baby. He is our CNC man, and I dont think we could build these tables without one. I mean, how would I even make a template for the 1020" (85 foot) radius edge of the table? Beats me .... Below is the assembled top of the 26 x 9 table we have been working on. I have described it in a couple of previous posts here and here ... check them out for the full story ... Let me know what you think
Here we are (again) working on the table. Thats Steve Holman (on the table) below of Holman Studios and his assistant Kevin helping us get it together ...
Were still on the temporary base here, and Steve is working on the real base in his shop just down the road ... Were planning to assemble the whole thing, granite and all, at least once here in my garage before we ship it all to New Jersey, along with its smaller (8x 20) cousin that we started work on yesterday.
Yesterday, we assembled the temporary base for the 20 table in the adjoining bay of my garage and Trevor started cutting the mdf parts for that project ... If I built these all the time, we would definitely need a MUCH bigger shop.
This one is only five four foot wide pieces, but it still takes up half the shop ...
Yesterday, Herb Johnson of Johnson Marble and Granite, of Proctor, Vermont came to get the first five granite templates. Thats his shop above. Herb has done much stone work for me in the past including the marble vanity top in this post, and all of the marble tops on this page here.
Hell do the 10 end pieces with the miters and their neighbors and see how they fit with the rest of the templates and then finish up with the six center pieces. He claims Ive done the hard part by making the templates .... Glad to hear that ....

another oval walnut pedestal table

while were on the subject and we only have a couple more outs to go in the world series, here are some photos of the other walnut pedestal table that trevors working on.  final sanding and staining start tomorrow ...
update 11/10
good to go .. its headed to the islands via miami .. wouldnt mind delivering it myself ...
loyal readers might recognize the larger version below from a blog post back in 2010.
that one was quite a bit larger at 60 x 86, but the concept and the execution is pretty much the same.
make the base and top and top of the base ..
determine the height of the pedestal parts and make the patterns.  use the scale model to determine if the patterns are correct.  note that to make the miters meet, we had to add a small straight section to the curve as the top is a different proportionat 40 x 60 .. 2/3, rather than 3/4
trevor made the scale model base parts from 13/16ths poplar and painted them and once they were fitted up, enlarged the design on the cnc and made the full size patterns ...
were going with the dark finish ..
TWO OUTS IN THE 9TH!  looking good for the sox ... tables looking good too, ready for final sanding and the first coats of stain tomorrow.
seats six good friends .. paper is 11 x 17 .. saw blades are 10"
2 and 2 with two outs.  i think the red sox are gonna win it ... and they just did ... i think ill go jump up and down a  bit ..

some carved scrolls for a mantle

we recently carved some butternut scrolls for a mantle that one of our clients was making.  we had sort of an internet fuzzy photo to use as an inspiration, but we did some google image research and came up with the drawing below.  click the photos to enlarge them ...

we were pretty happy with it, as was our client, but i did put  it up on the door for an hour or two to make just a few refinements before it went into our cad program.
draw over it ... copy what you need
the reason we decided to do that was that, as you can see from the first photo, the element had to be 13" thick (!!) to complete the design.  after a little thought, we realized wed need a whole bunch of pieces (about 20, not counting a couple of miscuts and practice pieces) and that led us instantly to the cnc.
after we finished the first one, we checked it on site before we did the second one ... good to go.
this is an onsite photo after the finish was applied

i have the actual cad drawing somewhere and ill post that later ... all for now ...
on site 12/14
