a french country table

well, this was kind of fun ... build a table like we built back in 2005 only almost 12 long instead of 7 long ... this one has a nice distressed, stained cherry finish with a thickish (1.375" ) top with breadboard ends and pegged apron/leg joints.  stretching out the aprons and redesigning/refining the leg/apron curve relationships was a bit of a challenge, but between trevor and me and the designer client, after a couple tries we figured it out.  click the photos to enlarge them ....
the original, copied from a photo that had been on that clients bulletin board for almost 10 years .. we blended the curve from the leg and flattened out the scallop detail of the aprons.
the long aprons look pretty graceful.  what you dont see here is the 2" of steel behind them that support the top over its +/- 11 span .. total length is 138" x 42" wide ..
when we first laid the boards up on the tablesaw, we had thoughts of shuffleboard ... shes a long one.
it took a couple steps to get it right .. first we cut a full size 1/4" mdf end on the  cnc and then a leg pattern, then a poplar leg and rail intersection, and finally the real legs and aprons.
trevor very cleverly figured out how to cut the 10aprons on the 8 cnc
add a little distressing, some softened edges, a couple coats of stain and some finish and it looks like the top photo.  im hoping to get a better photo tomorrow .... all for now ...

angle of repose

i read a book by wallace stegner a few years back called angle of repose ... everytime i see a pile of dirt or sawdust like this one, i enjoy thinking about the term ...

from wikipedia "Explanation of the Novels Title

The title is an engineering term for the angle at which soil finally settles after, for example, being dumped from a mine as tailings. It seems to describe the loose wandering of the Ward family as they try to carve out a civilized existence in the West and, Susan hopes, to return to the East as successes. The story details Olivers struggles on various mining, hydrology, and construction engineering jobs, and Susans adaptation to a hard life."

a good read, and an enjoyable, thought provoking, though only very occasionally, useful term ....

The Ducks Are Back

(Almost) Like the swallows returning to Capistrano, the ducks are back ... They arrived last Friday, as usual, almost to the day that the stream first cuts a channel across the ice. They were tired from their trip and were napping when we got to work on Friday, but Monday, whoa, below, we had an intruder ... a single female and they did not like here. We watched off and on for the morning while they chased her back and forth across the pond, and finally, she left ... Things were back to normal today but it was fun while it lasted ... Kits got the redwing blackbirds at the feeder too ... Big Tom turkey yesterday morning and the she also saw the bobcat briefly one morning last week, probably stalking the squirrels. Spring is coming ... Click the pictures to enlarge them ...
Back and forth ... when she got to the edge, she would fly back over their heads and the chase would continue, til finally she left ... havent seen her since ...
A little earlier than usual ... but Sam said this afternoon the leeks are up ... global warming I guess ...

take an object do something to it do something else to it part 1

in a recent post, i wrote about refinishing a table i built 21 years ago in a style i am still working in today, and in fact, started working on in 1986. ill give jasper johns some credit for that as i often use his quote in the title above when talking about a design language. my introduction to my style was by complete accident in 1986. a client/friend who had been living in germany for a few years described this desk she wanted me to build for her based on some furniture she had been living with during those years abroad. i kind got what she was describing and made her desk, as she described it to me. click the photos to enlarge them ...
there it is, in the upper right hand corner, mahogany and black paint with brass hardware. my wife and i both liked the style and since our house at the time was more or less devoid of nice furniture, i decided i would participate in a show at a local gallery and whatever didnt sell (hah !), we would bring home for the dining room. well, we know how that goes, and i have had this lovely furniture in my own home for 25 years now. this was before the internet and before my book collection had grown to include anything regarding the biedermeier style. the desk above we liked, but was too formal for us so we used native natural cherry with the black paint instead of the stained mahogany. presto ... studio style ....thats our table and chairs in the upper left corner above and our sideboard in the top left corner of the top photo. so, what am i trying to say here?. this is a post i have been trying to write for a while about, really, how did i get here? we actually did two custom studio style dining rooms last year, this one, and this one so on we go with it ...
so, here we are ... take an object, or a design, or a combination of woods or colors and try to imagine how they could be different, or similar but different; change a little here; change a little there; change a lot, but keep some stuff; keep at it; keep reading and looking; keep an open mind and keep changing ... when you look back 30 some years later youll indeed wonder how did i get here? , but youll be pleased that your designs hang together from the same thread or threads that run through all of it ...
you can add some inlays ... here we have a studio style half round with abalone inlays, which led to some bed headboards with abalone inlays, and we know where that went, which was on to one of our most involved and challenging pieces. more on the wood and metal style in a future post.
wood and steel tables ... the bethlehem steel series.

Back At It Bench Build Underway

Finally getting started on the new bench for my shop and am excited with the progress to date. With respect to Monsieur Roubo, Shaker is my style and I am building it using the plans, and hardware, purchased from Benchcrafted. The level of detail in their drawings is outstanding, the hardware package is complete, and the 3D available in a download are a plus.
Shown above is the basic carcass made from some pretty decent birch ply I bought at HD of all places for a reasonable price, was surprised at the quality of the plywood, havent found a void yet. It is sitting on an old bench that moved with me from TN that was sitting in my garage. I drilled some holes in the top for the holdfasts, and use the Benchcrafted Moxon vise I built to use as an end vise. It is working out great, but cant wait to get the real deal.
Case with face frame and end frame dry fit. Both frames are constructed with 5/4 (net 1") poplar. If you look at Benchcrafteds website, you will see the base of the bench is painted , so poplar is a good choice for the outer frame.
Frames and back attached, all that is needed for the bottom is the "foot" It is a frame made of 1X3 poplar. I may change that thickness once I determine the overall height of the bench.
As of this posting, the door for the end panel is mounted, the doors for the front are made, the drawers are next.
This will be one solid bench. The advertised finished weight will be around 350 lbs, certainly sturdy enough to handle any hand tool work.
A finished photo can be seen at Benchcrafted website and for those of you attending WIA in the Fall in Covington, KY, Jameel my have his bench there at the show.
More to come as I hit significant milestones during the construction.

goldtown rips it up on the town green

we live in dorset, but when we say were going to town, its really manchester, about 9 miles achoice. in dorset we have no traffic lights, a couple general stores, a post office and some inns. manchester, for the past few years, has been hosting a series of tueday evening free concerts on the green and last night was wills band, goldtowns, first appearance there. several people, including the woman who organizes the events, said last night was, by far, the biggest crowd ever ... and, they were psyched ... it was a great show! ..click the photos to enlarge them ... .
after an early afternoon shower threat, the sky cleared and it was a perfect summer evening, sunny and 72 degrees. it was my first concert with a serious waterfall in the background and loaded log trucks passing by, but the sound was great. lots of kids, like our friend kates, and andrew weill , the glass blowers below. kates kid had on her best too-too and did some great dancing.
andrew, on the other hand, looked like he was carrying a six pack ... but kit rescued her for a moment below. andrew said it was his daughters third goldtown event, counting one in utero ...
they closed with a traditional tune, rubens train. im not a video guy, but i took this one and you can feel the energy of the crowd by watching it. even ma was dancin ....
great crowd ..
great waterfall ...

made it to 100

well i have to note this milestone. i now have 100 members/followers of my photos and postings. thank you all for your comments, (i alchoices like those), and for sticking with me through my ramblings and comings and goings .. there is a huge community of woodworkers now, much, much larger than when i started almost 40 years ago. while i sometimes wish we might have had the internet when i was learning, im also glad to have figured out a lot of things on my own. this blog is my attempt to give a little back to the community i work in and spread the things around that i have learned ( and am still learning) over the years. i hope you are all having the same spring weather thats in our forecast for the next few days ... time to get out the convertible here and its not even the middle of march yet ... again, thank you all ... dan

A Few Repairs

All in , all done .... miracle recovery .... descriptive post below
We finished a couple of interesting repairs last week and I was sending photos to clients so I thought I would post them here too ... The bureau above is one of the last pieces of furniture we have to restore that was damaged in the fire I have occasionally written about. I thought it was a goner as it took several days in the sun to even get it open, and when we finally did, it really didnt look too promising ... Looks can be deceiving though and by the time Jim stripped the smoked shellac and sanded the interior and resealed it, I was starting to be just a little more optimistic. Click the photos to enlarge them ...
Here, Jim has stripped off the toasted shellac and sanded the interior, which he is now coating with a seal coat of shellac and wax to get rid of the smoke odor.
There were then some repair necessary to the face that that you can see in the first photo above ...
I chipped off what was left of the round corners and replaced them with new veneers. The masking tape was a good trick. It allowed me to bend the veneers cold without the pieces breaking or separating, kind of like a paper backed veneer would be, only thicker...
I taped them in place with the repair mans friend, 3M 2040 masking tape, a stretchy but strong and sticky clamp..
The stripped and sanded drawers ... Whats up with that top one? ..
We applied a thin coat of aniline dye, recoating some elements a couple of times to balance the color, and then shellaced with a wash coat of diluted fresh amber shellac. Well build slowly in thin coats from here until we reach the desired shine, which will not be too terribly shiny ... The hardware has been cleaned and reantiqued and is ready to go back on when the finish is complete ... I think it will look like a million bucks when its done ...
Another fire victim in the before stage ....
In the almost finished stage. The brass was polished and then reantiqued and the shellac was built slowly as mentioned above ... We finished the top with a coat of black patinating wax which was perfect for the job .... The Revere bowl was totally black and looked almost hopeless before Jim got to work on it ...
This is another repair that came through recently from Hildene, Robert Todd Lincolns home, in Manchester, Vermont. We had a huge windstorm a couple of weeks ago, which blew open the French doors at the house and knocked the table across the room

seeders instruments banjo 8

well, seeders instruments banjo #8 arrived in northern ireland on friday ... it was wills first international website order. the shipping was a concern at first, but the US Postal Service handled it flawlessly. it left tuesday afternoon ... 3, or 2? days ... reasonable cost considering ...
it sounds great, as you can hear on this one minute clip of will playing and singing. link to the video here ...
i didnt get a lot of progress pictures. it got itself together and out the door mostly on evenings and weekends and went without a hitch, so i only occasionally glimpsed the progress as it went along.
great saturn peg head inlay. that pot and drawing on the right is his next project
regular old hard oil finish ... 6 or seven coats i think ...
the whole deal

great combo of woods and restrained design collaboration. i liked the no fretboard inlays much more than i expected to ...
